Roy Edroso has a theory:
John Quincy [Adams] once responded to a toast of "My country, right or wrong," with "I disclaim all patriotism incompatible with the principles of eternal justice."...We've come a long way since..., alas .(Where's the Outrage?)
It's probably the main trait of the wingnut: big on displacement and also shit-scared all the damn time. In fact, that might be the true difference between a wingnut and a liberal: they think no principle matters more than staying alive and are willing for any number of others (including Americans) to die to allow them to go on feeling that way. Feeling physically or economically or in any way threatened makes them go batshit crazy.
None of them give a rat's ass about freedom. They just want to feel safe. And for all their paranoid fear of "big government," they actually believe that it's the government's role to make them feel that way.
Standing up for your principles even when there's a risk that you might suffer consequences isn't a sign of weakness, as the wingers bellow, but of courage. It's they---not liberals---who lack courage.
