We've been trying very hard not to think about the "Bush legacy project," since its very existence defies common sense, decency, geometry, and reality. We're afraid of getting sucked into some GOP black hole of revisionism and coming out on the other side in a world like Camazotz in A Wrinkle in Time where everything is controlled by "Bush's Brain" and all the moms stay home, the dads all go to work, and everyone does everything in exactly the same way and at the same time, all the time. And (channeling Berke Breathed now) is compelled every Sunday to attend the Christianist Church of his or her choice (no Quakers on Bush World).
But it's real, it's here, and we might as well put in earplugs to stop the ear-splitting screeching and shrilling of our bullshit detectors, and wade right in.
And actually, it isn't as bad as we thought, if you stop in time. The first part of the article actually confirms what you already suspected: it wasn't just poor W who was reality-challenged, it was his entire administration. They built a wall of stupid around themselves so high they couldn't see anything else.
"No. It all turns out different," he said. Not bad, he insists, just different. "We were all smarter before we showed up here."
Much of Washington, Rove said, never accepted Bush as a legitimate president and "acted accordingly."
n the seventh-floor government office where Bush put her, Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, a Bushie since the first gubernatorial campaign, said, "Some things have happened ... that no one could have predicted."
From the Colorado vacation home that Bush's career helped him purchase, longtime adviser Mark McKinnon also talks about how things turned out.
"It was a different world then," he said. "It was a time of relative peace and prosperity, and there were things on the agenda — the compassionate conservatism agenda — that we thought would make for a very domestic-focused presidency."
"External events intervened, starting with the recount," McKinnon said.(Statesman.com)
The evil doesn't start till you read beyond that point and learn that it in the alternate universe of BushWorld, it was the recount and the "partisan politics" that caused the Bush Administration's EPIC FAIL.
Rove is now writing a book which---for denizens of Bush World---will prove once and for all that Bush was really a a “far-sighted leader.”(Think Progress)
Not only that, Rove is going to name names. It was their fault---the people, who unlike Rove, were unfairly partisan---that Bush was never accepted as legitimate.
It's these Bush-hating partisans, unlike the fair and balanced Rove, are the reason---and the ONLY reason---that the last eight years have been such a nightmare catastrophic failure.
Are you ready, Bush haters? Because Rove is about to call you out ONE BY ONE BY ONE BY ONE.
Also reserved for between the covers of Rove’s book is his checklist of the “great many of the political actors in this town (who) never accepted him as a legitimate president.”
“I’ve got behind-the-scenes episodes that are going to show how unreceiving they were of this man as president of the United States,” Rove said, adding: “I’m going to name names and show examples.”
In the Cox interview, Rove also refused to acknowledge the role of Bush administration officials in various scandals, including the Valerie Plame, instead blaming “Washington partisanship.”(Think Progress)
We wish we were some of those people---we'd be SO EXCITED. It'll be like an alternate universe Honor Roll of the discriminating and intelligent.
About the "Bush legacy project"....Rove seems to have been a bit cagy when Alan Colmes asked him directly if he was participating.
Rove disingenuously answered that he could not comment because he hasn't seen the reports. He added “Am I out there defending George W. Bush? You bet.”
Colmes pressed, “Are you working, literally, on a project to shore up (George W. Bush's) legacy? To make him look good for posterity? Is that part of what you're involved with right now?”
Rove: "What I'm involved in is helping set the record straight." (Newshoggers)
And by "straight" he means "straight as a corkscrew is straight."
Memeorandum has more here.
Meanwhile, sing along with "Karl"! It's a real cowpie-stomper.
