by Blue Stockings | ....and hints darkly at condign punishment to be inflicted upon its source. Via Memeorandum:
THE source who told us last week about Michelle Obama getting lobster and caviar delivered to her room at the Waldorf-Astoria must have been under the influence of a mind-altering drug. She was not even staying at the Waldorf. We regret the mistake, and our former source is going to regret it, too. Bread and water would be too good for such disinformation. (NY Post)
I don't see why they're so upset about this particular piece of disinformation, but anyway. I wonder who told them it and what will happen to him or her? "[O]ur former source is going to regret it too."
Here's what the Murdoch-owned paper had published in its gossip column:
"Though he's battling GOP accusations that he's an Ivy League elitist, Barack Obama has a lifestyle of the rich and famous," the report read. "While he was at a meeting at the Waldorf-Astoria at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Michelle Obama called room service and ordered lobster hors d'oeuvres, two whole steamed lobsters, Iranian caviar and champagne, a tipster told Page Six." (Salon)
Which....come on. As Alex Koppelman says at Salon, really? Iranian caviar? Lobsters and champagne? That is so lame. It's like the person who made the story up picked the most obviously expensive food on the planet. (No arugula?) It's like...we all know we can't afford the lobster or the imported caviar. That's just dumb.
The PUMAs---and Sean Hannity---were all over it. Of course they were. It's stupid, petty, trivial, and so thin Piper Palin could see through it, but it fits their imaginary narrative of who Michelle is, so....
That didn't stop some of the remaining PUMA holdout sites from prominently featuring the item, and posting images of what was purportedly a reciept for the order. Some of those sites, like Puma PAC, have apologized for the error. One, HillBuzz, removed its post that included the fake receipt (Google's cached version is here), but apparently without acknowledging the deletion, a violation of typical blogger etiquette. (Salon)
I'm so glad to see that the PUMA sites, which have lost all contact with Hillary or Hillary's reality, are getting schooled in the reliability of their sources. Sheer mean-spiritedness deserves no better.
Gawker: "The gossip section so did not see this coming, because why wouldn't you run with something so plausible?"
Says Roy Edroso at The Village Voice:
Corrections have yet to appear at USS Neverdock, Atlas Shrugs, Clayton Cramer, American Power, Sweetness & Light, Flopping Aces, and a million other rightwing citizen journalist outlets where the story was disseminated. But don't worry, it'll all be forgotten as soon as they get those new Michelle Obama tapes!
And:
Yesterday on his show, Sean Hannity, lamely trying to channel Robin Leach, did a long monologue on the Page Six story that reported the Obamas checking into the Waldorf Astoria and chowing down on lobster and caviar, complete with every elitist inference allowed. (Taylor Marsh)
Taylor Marsh wonders whether Sean Hannity will issue a retraction, but thinks we probably better not hold our breath.
The mind-altering substance to which you refer is a combination of fear, racism and self-loathing.
This story was easily fact-checked. And they didn't check it because they knew all along it was false spin to paint Michelle as "elite." Which is anathema for a black woman...
Nice try Post and Hannity. Both garbage news outfits suffering from white fright.
