FBI Thwarts 4 Homegrown Terrorists Who Were Planning to Blow Up Bronx Synagogues

by Damozel |  Their arrest began with them planting bombs -- fake bombs, thanks to the "assistance" of an FBI informant -- in cars outside the Temple and Jewish Center.(NYT)  Fortunately, the FBI have been aware of the plot since June 2008, thanks to a federal informant. 

Law enforcement officials identified the four men arrested as James Cromitie, David Williams, Onta Williams and Laguerre Payen, all of Newburgh. Some of the men were of Arabic descent, and one is of Haitian descent, according to law enforcement officials. At least three were United States citizens, according to officials. They are all Muslim, a law enforcement official said.

Mr. Cromitie, who is of Afghan descent, had told the informant that he was upset about the war in Afghanistan and that that he wanted to “do something to America.” Mr. Cromitie stated “the best target” — the World Trade Center — “was hit already,” according to the complaint.

In April, Mr. Cromitie and the three other men selected the synagogues as their targets, the statement said. The informant soon helped them get the weapons, which were incapable of being fired or detonated, according to the authorities.  (NYT)

The FBI describes the plot as "aspirational" -- ill will, but without the sophistication to carry out their plans -- and as under control at all times, thankfully.  (NYT) 

New York political leaders from both sides expressed relief in characteristic fashion.

“This was a very serious threat that could have cost many, many lives if it had gone through,” Representative Peter T. King, Republican from

Long Island

, said in an interview with WPIX-TV. “It would have been a horrible, damaging tragedy. There’s a real threat from homegrown terrorists and also from jailhouse converts.”

Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York, said in a statement: “If there can be any good news from this terror scare it’s that this group was relatively unsophisticated, infiltrated early, and not connected to another terrorist group. This incident shows that we must always be vigilant against terrorism — foreign or domestic.” (NYT)

The far right are very fired up to find something to justify their constant state of hysterical rage at the continued possibility that evil Mooslims might hide under their beds ready to come out to kill them all.  Finally, real terrorists, however pathetically useless and inept, right here in America!   They may have been American citizens, but at least they were Muslim!

So anyway,  Hilzoy has a proposal, seeing as we're clearly doomed anyway:

This raises the difficult question: what should we do with these would-be terrorists while they await trial? And if they are convicted, what then? I assume that if it's too dangerous to move people at Guantanamo to the United States, it must be much too dangerous to allow these jihadists to run loose in our prisons. After all, they might provide financing for other jihadists from their supermax cells, or radicalize other prisoners, or use special Terrorist Mind Control Techniques to create a whole army of brainwashed convicts under their complete control.

I'd suggest killing them, cutting them into pieces, and shipping their parts to parts unknown immediately (trials? who can afford trials under these circumstances?), if I weren't afraid that some hitherto unknown al Qaeda trick might allow their reanimated body parts to slither around in search of one another and, eventually, reconstitute themselves as the Islamofascist Undead.  (Political Animal)
