by Deb Cupples | Frankly, I have problems with U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), as I mentioned here and here. Still, it's somewhere between absurd and stupid that Republican National Committee's (RNC) marketing operatives intentionally put out an ad that juxtaposes Ms. Pelosi to a fictional character named "Pussy Galore" (from the James Bond movie Goldfinger). A video of the ad is at Crooks and Liars.
For almost a decade, RNC marketing operatives (led partly by Karl Rove) were admired for their genius due to their god-like ability to persuade millions of Americans to believe ridiculously unreal stuff.
Back to Ms. Pelosi and Ms. Galore: the juxtaposition makes no sense. The fictional Ms. Galore started out as a villain but later redeemed herself by helping Bond foil the real villain's evil plot. I don't remember whether Ms. Galore redeemed herself before or after she moaned "Oh Jaaames."
If the GOP's Geniuses were trying to negatively paint Ms. Pelosi, then they picked the wrong Bond woman. A better one would have been the utterly un-redeemable, sadistic sicko Fatima Blush (Never Say Never Again).
I doubt that the GOP's Geniuses had intended to paint Ms. Pelosi as redeemable, because all geniuses know that being redeemable is a good thing. This leaves me wondering: what on Earth were the GOP's Geniuses' trying to accomplish by linking Ms. Pelosi and Ms. Galore?
Perhaps they thought that linking the word "Pussy" with Speaker Pelosi and the Democratic Party would diminish both Pelosi and her party in the public's eyes. Perhaps they thought that such sophisticated and subtle cleverness would evoke laughter.
Admittedly, it would evoke laughter -- at least from the kind of people who, even after age 30, are still sent into l0-minute fits of belly laughter over the mere thought of a fart.
Oddly, RNC officials seemed unable to describe the intended connection between Speaker Pelosi and Ms. Galore:
"The RNC declined repeatedly to explain the Pelosi/Galore connection, saying only that the video was about the speaker's "lack of leadership." Chaffetz is the only Republican thus far who has been willing to comment on the video. (Politico)
Maybe the GOP's Geniuses are just keeping the connection secret. Maybe they really had a strategic purpose in mind -- one that is actually working for the Republican Party's benefit, one that we non-geniuses simply are not smart enough to figure out.
Then again, maybe the GOP's Geniuses are still underestimating (or otherwise mis-assessing) the values, perspective, and intelligence of America's voters. After 8+ years, it's gotta be a hard habit to break -- like cigarettes.
Is it any wonder that a recent Gallup poll indicated that the Republican Party has lost the affiliation of many Americans from all demographic groups?
I'd be willing to bet that the "Pussy Galore" ad will further embarrass what's left of the GOP's steadily dwindling rank and file members, thus driving even more voters out of the Republican party.
Balloon Juice has a brief but amusing analysis, which blogger Tim F. fittingly put under the category "Republican Stupidity":
Ya know, in James Bond film intros it’s Bond framed in the barrel of the gun. The blood belongs to the shooter, who gets drilled by Bond and dies. If I get the analogy right, Nancy Pelosi is James bond, the CIA tried to shoot her but she was too quick for them and they went down instead.
Um, ok.
At least one congressional Republican out there recognizes the GOP Geniuses' lapse in judgment:
"'I thought it was reprehensible, irresponsible and unpersuasive. If we're going to regain the credibility of the American people, we're going to have to stop with silly antics like that. It may get a snide chuckle inside the Beltway, but it offends most people. We have to get away from the politics of personal destruction,' he said of the video. (Politico)
Memeorandum has commentary.
Moronic misstep - you're exactly right. Probably never agree with you much again, Deb, but I do here.

Oh flower! How've you been?

Been workin', Deb. Somebody's gotta. Runnin' scared from the future.
I mean, even Obama sez our current national debt load is "unsustainable", and that holders of U.S. debt will eventually “get tired” of buying it, causing interest rates on everything from auto loans to home mortgages to increase. “It will have a dampening effect on our economy.”
Now he tells us!
