According to the Boston Globe, four Democratic members of the U.S. House were arrested yesterday during a protest near the Sudanese Embassy over genocide in Darfur. The arrestees are James McGovern (Massachusetts), John Lewis (Georgia), Donna Edwards (Maryland), Lynn Woolsey (California), and Keith Ellison (Minnesota).
The Congress-folks were not violent: the just stood quietly on the wrong side of a string of yellow police tape when a police official asked them to leave. Reportedly, some of them expected to get arrested: Rep. McGovern left his belt and tie at home so that they would not be confiscated.
There's a man who knows how to plan for contingencies. Kudos to the four members of Congress for exercising their First Amendment rights and trying to bring attention to the issue. Memeorandum has commentary.
