by Deb Cupples | Critics are coming out of the woodwork, as Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg tries to persuade New York's Governor to appoint her to Hillary Clinton's U.S. Senate seat. Some critics don't appreciate that Ms. Kennedy sat silently for eight years instead of using her position to fight the Bush Administration.
Some critics think Ms. Kennedy lacks qualifications to take one of the highest offices in our government. Others think she hasn't even voted regularly enough to show a strong commitment to politics. Still others think that a Kennedy appointment would simply reek of entitlement: i.e., if you have money and a famous name, you're entitled to have a high office handed to you.
George Stephanopoulos thinks it makes sense to appoint Ms. Kennedy, because she could raise gobs of money for New York Democrats. Oddly, Ms. Kennedy reportedly written sent many donation checks to New York Dems. The New York Daily News reports:
Caroline Kennedy's supporters say she could raise tons of money as a senator, but when it comes to writing checks to New York Democrats, she's been largely AWOL.
This decade, other than a $1,000 donation to City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, the Camelot heiress has not financially supported any Democrat seeking city or state office in New York, records reveal.
Some say Kennedy, who is worth at least $100 million, missed an opportunity to curry favor among Democratic pols to establish herself as a serious political player as she lobbies Gov. Paterson for Hillary Clinton's Senate seat. (NY Daily News)
I cannot wait to see how this one works out. Memeorandum has commentary.
