So... why not simply allow wages to rise? That seems like a much less destructive solution than allowing home prices to crash uncontrollably, leaving neighborhoods with empty houses that turn into meth labs, cities with insufficient funds for police, fire, and schools, and homeless families unable to contribute to our national prosperity.

I agree, but the people who control wage levels don't seem to keen on raising other people's wages.
