So it seems that McCain's people put the same amount of thought into this decision as he did picking his running mate...

De Long: "It seems as though...nobody in the McCain campaign cares about actually having policy proposals, but only about having something incoherent that an ignorant and lazy reporter can be deceived into thinking is a policy proposal."

Exactly. In the end, the detail of the proposal is irrelevant, since (1) the crisis will have moved on substantially by January (though not necessarily for the better); and (2) actual policies will be driven by the political realities of presidential office. But the peremptory manner underpinning McCain's policy formation is much more worrying.

Where have all the sensible Republicans gone?
