by Teh Nutroots | Read here about Eagleburger's awkward attempt to walk back his criticism. Robert Farley at LGM ["We...Uh, we entrusted this guy with our foreign policy?"] called it " the most pathetic walkback that I've ever seen." You WILL want to read it because it is.
Still. Eagleburger [heh] said what he said:
Lawrence Eagleburger, one of McCain's prominent supporters, served as Secretary of State under Bush 41. Though McCain and Palin love to drop his name (HuffPost via Memeorandum), apparently Eagleburger's not really down with McCain's veep choice. Like 59% of voters, he has doubts about Palin's preparedness:
During an NPR interview, Eagleburger said:
"I don't think at the moment she is prepared to take over the reigns of the presidency. I can name for you any number of other vice presidents who were not particularly up to it either. So the question, I think, is can she learn and would she be tough enough under the circumstances if she were asked to become president, heaven forbid that that ever takes place?
"Give her some time in the office and I think the answer would be, she will be [pause] adequate. I can't say that she would be a genius in the job. But I think she would be enough to get us through a four year... well I hope not... get us through whatever period of time was necessary. And I devoutly hope that it would never be tested."(HuffPost)
Yeah, that's damning her with exceedingly faint praise, I'd say. As the article points out, "The indictment of Palin was all the more biting because both she and McCain have held Eagleburger up repeatedly during the past several weeks as evidence that the Republican ticket has firm standing and support within foreign policy circles."
That seems kind of like one in the eye for the "Palin is the future of the Republican party" set. And also, incidentally, for any wingnut bloggers who think McCain is the problem and Palin the solution.

Why did you have to be so dishonest about what Eagleburger said? He did not say "Heaven forbid" that Palin Become President, he said heaven forbid McCain would die. He was talking about the circumstances that would lead to her becoming president. If you had listened to the audio of Eagleburger you should know what he said.

On second glance I see you knew exactly what he said since you quoted it in the post, but chose to be dishonest in the headline. Nice.

It says what he said. You read it your way; I read it mine.
And...you're welcome.
