by Deb Cupples | As you read this, think about how it reflects on John McCain, who consciously chose Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.
Last week, during an interview with ABC's Charlie Gibson, Gov. Palin flatly said that she "never pressured" former Alaska Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan to fire the state trooper who was involved in a messy divorce with Gov. Palin's sister. Monegan did not fire that trooper, and Palin later fired Monegan.
Gov. Palin claimed that she fired Mr. Monegan for performance-based reasons (not over his refusal to fire Palin's soon-to-be-ex brother in law). Perhaps it is one massive coincidence. According to ABC, Mr. Monegan flatly disagrees:
"'She's not telling the truth when she told ABC neither she nor her husband pressured me to fire Trooper Wooten,' said Walt Monegan, the Alaskan official whose dismissal by Sarah Palin is the focus of a state investigation known as Troopergate. 'And she's not telling the truth to the media about her reasons for firing me.'" (ABC)
It's the classic he-said-she-said. Unfortunately for Gov. Palin, it's pretty hard to believe her version of anything these days -- absent solid evidence -- because she seems downright addicted to truth-stretching (and perhaps outright lying).
Most recently, for example, Gov. Palin publicly claimed that she'd visited Iraq, though she hadn't really crossed the Kuwait-Iraq border. (Boston Globe) Apparently, the Governor intended to boost her foreign-relations creds and/or her image as a sophisticated world traveler -- neither of which seems a particularly achievable goal.
Then there's Gov. Palin's claims that she fiercely fought against the corrupt practice of federal earmark allocation. Unfortunately, her allegedly fierce fight took place after she'd secured a combined hundreds of millions of dollars in federal earmarks for her state (as Governor) and for the City of Wasilla (as mayor). In fact, Palin's Administration is still trying to get federal earmarks.
For a list of more than 20 instances of Gov. Palin's truth-stretching (or lying), see Think Progress.

I wholeheartedly agree. I keep trying to access the MSNBC page on this story, but everytime I do (and I've switched from my home computer to Kinko's) it comes up blank. Well, I'm sure it'll turn up.
