by Deb Cupples | Earlier this week, former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee (a Republican-turned-Independent) told a think tank this week that McCain's running mate Sarah Palin is a "cocky wacko." (CNN)
"Cocky" I could see -- and definitely "dishonest" or "fake." But wacko? To be a slick and calculating politicians requires some degree of acumen and sanity -- and Gov. Palin is nothing if not slick and calculating.
Frankly, I'd like to see Obama supporters and the media focus less on the nonsensical stuff about Palin and more on the substantive stuff.
They should, up until election day, repeatedly hammer home to the public Gov. Palin's actual failings.
Palin's hypocrisy and dishonesty regarding earmarks would be a good focal point.
Questionable competence would be another facet of Gov. Palin worth harping on: I mean, she did -- as mayor -- leave her tiny town of Wasilla, Alaska with $20 million in debt (among other things). Given our national debt and our nation's crumbling economy, do we really want such a fiscally irresponsible person anywhere near the White House?
Then there's Palin's heartless disregard for pregnant teens: she cut funding for shelters, though she has long favored policies that lead to unwanted pregnancies (e.g., Palin opposes abortion yet favors absinence-only education).
I could go on, but my point is that plenty of legitimate, substance-related information about Palin is out there -- and that's what Obama's supporters should try to push to the public -- not the dumb stuff.
Furthermore, Obama supporters should not merely attack Palin for her obvious shortcomings, but should repeatedly hammer home how the deficiencies reflect on McCain -- the man who intentionally put Gov. Palin in the spotlight.
Memeorandum has commentary.
