"I saw flesh and body parts flying through the sky,' said Hamid al-Zobaie, 54, a relative of the men, who spoke from a bed at a local hospital, where he was being treated for wounds from the blast. 'The walls covered with blood, even the teacups filled with blood.'"
Sunday, members of an "Awakening Group" were celebrating the release of the group leader's son from U.S. custody. A man approached the group and detonated the explosives that were under his vest. (WaPo)
Officials are not sure who the bomber was or whom he represented.
"Awakening Groups" are former Sunni insurgents that the Iraqi or U.S. government have been paying, essentially to patrol neighborhoods for insurgent activities and to not attack U.S. and Iraqi interests.
In December 2007, some U.S. and Iraqi officials recognized the frightening prospect that insurgents could infiltrate the "Awakening Groups." In other words, our government may be helping to arm our enemies, which may lead to (more) civil war in Iraq.
With news like this, it's hard to be confident in the Bush Administration's war-planning skills -- especially after 190,000+ U.S. weapons were lost in Iraq, as well $1 billion in other military hardware.
