Posted by Damozel | Neither one plans to endorse either candidate --- they plan to use their 'political capital' for poverty (John) and health care (Elizabeth) --- and both have good and bad to say about both of them. (People.com) I care what they think because John Edwards was the candidate I really wanted and I'd have preferred Elizabeth even to him.
Elizabeth Edwards said again that she prefers Hillary's health care plan. Furthermore, she was offended by Obama's 'misleading' representations of Hillary's plan.
In their first joint interview since John, the Democratic former senator and 2004 vice presidential nominee, dropped out of the race in January, the couple named what they liked and disliked about each of the remaining Democrats – and Mrs. Edwards didn't hesitate: "I like Hillary's health care plan.... (People.com)
John Edwards, on the other hand, is impressed by Hillary's 'tenacity.' '"I think her tenacity shows a real strength that's inside her," he said. (People.com)
So what don't they like? 'The lobbyist money,' said Elizabeth. (People.com) Oh fair enough as regards Hillary, but she clearly hasn't looked very carefully into where Obama's money is actually coming from (see links below). Even the mainstream press has called him out on his claims of independence from special interests.
Edwards on the other hand jumped back on the 'old politics' bandwagon. He doesn't like Hillary's 'old politics.' Sigh. As for Obama, they said the usual things people say about him. Change, new politics, young people, etc. etc.
From where we're sitting, Obama's "new politics" look exactly like the same old politics we've always had (see links below), except with a giant spoonful of hypocrisy to disguise the nasty taste.
But the Edwards didn't say that. Have they really not noticed? Elizabeth: "The fact that he has motivated so many young people to be involved, I think is fantastic." (People.com) I go back and forth about the value that the very young bring to political debate, but I'll give him that.
John Edwards said, "One is, I think he really does want to bring about serious change and a different way of doing things." (People.com) Yes, that's what they say.
I've yet to hear specifically what this 'serious change' will entail. What is it, specifically, he plans to change? But Edwards, like so many other Dems, doesn't seem too particular about the specifics; I think "change" and "old politics" are just code for "we've already had one Clinton and that's enough, thanks."
Obama's negatives? Elizabeth said, "I don't like his health care plan or his advertising on health care, which I think is misleading." She's not wrong. Before everyone broke into warring camps, even some pro-Obama bloggers were pretty upset about his misrepresentations of Clinton's health care plan.
And John said: "Sometimes I want to see more substance under the rhetoric." (People.com) That's not fair. How can he show more substance when there isn't any? He is what he is.
But this was my favorite bit. John Edwards was going on about Obama:
"I think it's a great symbolic thing to have an African-American who could be president."
At that, Mrs. Edwards rolled her eyes and, gripping the arms of her kitchen chair with some exaggeration, seemed about to lunge from her seat. "What about the great symbolic thing about a woman ..."
"It's important. It's important," her husband said. "I know it."(People.com; emphasis added)
