by D. Cupples | President Bush told a NATO summit that he plans to increase the number of troops in Afghanistan. Perhaps the Commander in Chief will simply move troops from Iraq. Perhaps our armed forces will just have to materialize more troops out of the air we breathe. Then again, a draft may be on the horizon.
Or maybe our politicians will allow our nation's economy and employment situation to remain dismal -- thus giving many young people little choice about how they can feed themselves and build a future aside from joining the military. The Los Angeles Times reports:
"U.S. officials previously made it clear that the foreign force of 59,000, including 31,000 Americans, was insufficient. But they had not committed the U.S. to providing more troops.
"The president did not specify how many additional troops the U.S. would send." (LA Times)
Frankly, I don't know whether our nation should or shouldn't send more troops to Afghanistan. I do wonder why -- after President Bush ignored Afghanistan for six years or so -- he has recently found a need to re-focus on that nation we invaded back in 2001.
It's such a juggling act, and I don't know how he does it. We seem to be making little progress in Iraq since invading that nation five years ago, and President Bush also seems to want to start a war with Iran -- this, on top of wanting to beef up troop strength in Afghanistan.
Lately, it's been looking as though President Bush's fundamental goal has been simply to create as much turmoil as possible in the Middle East.
