by D. Cupples| Some Tibetans in southwestern China believe that Chinese police killed innocent civilians during protests. (Reuters) The Chinese government seems to be denying it. Reportedly, President Bush has remained silent about Chinese officials' handling of the protests (NY Times).
Meanwhile, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a long time critic of some Chinese government policies, met with the Dalai Lama to discuss the Tibet situation. The Hill Reports:
"House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) met with the Dalai Lama and offered words of support for Tibetan protesters and criticism of China’s crackdown during a visit Friday to Dharamsala, India, the headquarters of Tibetan exiles.
“'If freedom-loving people throughout the world do not speak out against China's oppression in Tibet we have lost all moral authority to speak on human rights anywhere in the world,' Pelosi said, according to a transcript of her remarks released by her office." (The Hill)
