Photo of Rockefeller building by yours truly. Feel free to alter and use it (or any other pics in this post), just link back to BN-Politics.
In July, I took my 15-year-old nephew to New York City. It was like observing a different species. Apparently, people his age crave energy drinks, sugar by the pound, and long showers -- and they can't take art museums for more than 15 minutes. At least he liked the comedy club I got him into -- until the middle-aged comedienne discussed her teenage son's affinity for long showers. I love NYC, despite the omnipresent scaffolding. I just accept the city as in a constant state of renovation. Below are a few of the photos from my trip (13 of them, to be precise).
.
1. Grand Central & Met Life. I booked the Hyatt next to Grand Central, so my nephew could easily find his way back if we got separated. I won't stay in Midtown again due to the prevalence of chain restaurants. Every night, we took a cab or the subway a fair distance to get real New York food.
.
.
.
2. Top of the Empire State Building. I took this from the building's observation deck. My nephew actually liked this part of the tour. Tip: to avoid lines, order the City Pass, which includes admission to some museums and a harbor tour.
.
3. Chrysler Building. I took this photo from the Empire State Building. Though my hotel window opened to the Chrysler Building, I couldn't see Chrysler's top from the Hyatt's 25th floor.
.
.
4. Green-wood Cemetery (Brooklyn). Beautiful grounds: several ponds, impressive mausoleums, a view of Manhattan's skyline and Lady Liberty from Battle Hill (the highest point in Brooklyn, now a war memorial). People used to have picnics there. Info is here.
.
.
5. Spider Man at Sony. My nephew wanted to see Sony's Wonder Lab (a hands-on museum with free admission -- get reservations in advance). Spider Man is at least 40 feet tall, spanning several floors.
.
.
.
.
6. Flat Iron Building. This gem sits at the intersection of Broadway, 5th Avenue and 23rd Street. Given that the building's rounded front is less than 8 feet wide, it's hard to get a good shot. An overhead view would have been great.
.
.
.
7. Washington Square Arch. This is in Washington Square Park (which is largely cement) and is at the beginning of 5th Avenue, if you're starting in the south. Though owned by the city, it seems to be part of the NYU campus. The arch was in When Harry Met Sally (and in a million other movies).
.
.
.
.
8. Sardi's. I didn't see a show during this trip, but I couldn't resist taking a shot of Saridi's (and the Helen Hayes Theater) after taking my nephew to the uncomfortably packed Times Square during our first night in town..
.
..
.
.
.
.
9. Central Park. A little piece of it, anyway.
.
.
.
10. Greywacke Arch. It's in Central Park.
.
.
.
.
11. Little Italy. It was a weekend street fair on Mulberry Street, where you get a view of the Empire State Building. During my last trip (1999), I had dinner at Angelo's on Mulberry Street, where my step father would go with his father back in the '50s (or '60s). Stop by Ferrara for mini pastries and coffee (on Grand Street off Mulberry).
.
.
.
12. Subway. Subways give me the sense of having an authentic local experience. In Madrid and Paris, I prided myself on figuring out the metro within two days. Of course, I wouldn't want to have to take the subway to work every day.
.
13. Plaza Goes Condo. The famous Plaza Hotel, near Central Park, is going condo. Prices start at $1.5 million, if you're interested. (See web site)

Great photos. It's been a very, very long time since I've been to NY.
Thanks for checking out my TT.

OK, I have to say that I've never been to NY and now you make me want to go so badly I could just spit! However, I want YOU as my tour guide! I don't take long showers, and don't crave energy drinks (unless you count coffee). I love art museums, but I DO eat sugar by the pound. I promise I wouldn't be much trouble.
