by Teh Nutroots | Wow. I did not expect this:
Mitt Romney suspended his bid for the Republican presidential nomination Thursday, saying if he continued it would "forestall the launch of a national campaign and be making it easier for Sen. Clinton or Obama to win."
"In this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign be a part of aiding a surrender to terror. This is not an easy decision. I hate to lose," the former Massachusetts governor said.
"If this were only about me, I'd go on. But it's never been only about me. I entered this race because I love America, and because I love America, in this time of war I feel I have to now stand aside for our party and for our country." (CNN)
Right. But self-serving rationalizations aside, it's bad news for Clinton and Obama, assuming anyone still believed he could take the nomination from McCain.
Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama saw Romney as a vulnerable candidate that they would rather run against instead of McCain, CNN senior political correspondent Candy Crowley said.
"They were looking at Mitt Romney as pretty doable in the political sense saying, 'This is a guy that has a record that we can really run with' and they ran with it in the Republican Party as you know, saying that he used to be pro-choice, now he's anti-abortion. He has changed his position on stem cells he has changed his position on gay unions, that sort of thing," she said.(CNN)
Too bad for Clinton and Obama. I am too filled with tasty schadenfreude to care about what this means for them. What will Rush do? Will Coulter campaign for Hillary? Will Dobson sit sulking at home on election day? And how, after the nasty things they've said, will they ever take any of it back?
This almost makes up for the way I've started to hate both remaining Democrats. I can't vote for McCain ("liberal MY ASS). But the effect he's having on the hardliners makes me kind of want to shake his hand and maybe give him the ol' one-armed man-to-man hug.
It was a shocker. He will be a formidable candidate for either Obama or Clinton. I'm not certain that either offers a plan for ending the war in Iraq that is both sensible and marketable. As McCain wants to escalate such crusades, the Democrat will need to beat him soundly there.
The religious right still has Huckabee, who might yet have a chance with Romney out.
Ron Paul? Third Party run? (Perhaps some Democrats can secretly fund this one.)

I hadn't heard about this yet! I guess that's what I get for not watching the news!
