Posted by D. Cupples | Perhaps it's time for some major holding of horses. The Atlanta Journal Constitution (via Memeorandum) reports:
"A story in Friday's New York Times that said U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) was going to back Barack Obama for president is inaccurate, a spokeswoman for the former civil rights leader told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution this morning.
"Lewis press secretary Brenda Jones did not elaborate and has not yet responded to a request for clarification."
If Rep. Lewis has not actually decided to jump off the Clinton ship, then how has it become "conventional wisdom" that he is switching to Obama? Having not seen much else in the media about the AJC's story, millions of voters are likely confused. Update Apparently, CNN doesn't believe the statement of Lewis's spokeswoman:
"The New York Times reported Friday that another black lawmaker from Georgia, Rep. John Lewis, was also going to shift his support to Obama from Clinton. Lewis is one of the most senior African-American members of Congress and a respected voice on civil rights.
"Lewis' office, however, told CNN that The Times misrepresented his intentions and said Lewis had not decided to switch his support to Obama. But the AP reported many sources close to the Georgia lawmaker said he was torn over his earlier endorsement of Clinton." (CNN)
Surely, CNN isn't challenging Rep. Lewis's ability to know his own mind or -- worse yet -- calling him a liar.
