Posted by Damozel | By now, leftward-tilting Fox lovers like me have learned---with what regret!---that cutely wild-eyed right-wing cheerleader Michelle Malkin has quit The O'Reilly Factor. Geraldo Rivera was a bit brisk with her, it appears, chiefly over her stance on immigration, which Rivera finds repugnant. An apology or 'apology' he subsequently made to her on 'The Factor' was, in her words, 'a complete farce.' (Think Progress) But there is a bright side: "You can catch me on other Fox News shows and read my daily blog posts and weekly columns at MichelleMalkin.com." (Think Progress)
Well, there's a relief. I read her blog from time to time. Sometimes I need a little break from reality as I know it and a little insight into the fear and panicky fury underlying all the vitriol that's coming (even at moderates like me who would prefer a bipartisan world where we all join hands) from the Far Right. I like seeing the ingredients of Malkin's diatribes while they're still boiling away in the cauldron, as it were. So I like knowing that MichelleMalkin.com is there for me.
And I'm so sorry that Rivera was rude to her. As I said, he was a bit terse. Specifically---this is according to Crooks and Liars----he said, doubtless among other things: “Michelle Malkin is the most vile, hateful commentator I’ve ever met in my life." (Crooks and Liars) Harsh! And there's more:
“She actually believes that neighbors should start snitching out neighbors, and we should be deporting people, “It’s good she’s in D.C. and I’m in New York,” Rivera sneers. “I’d spit on her if I saw her.” (Crooks and Liars)
Not to take sides or anything, but you can see where an 'apology' might ring sort of hollow after that. On the other hand....wouldn't being driven from the field by the powerful rhetoric of Geraldo Rivera, and a threat of being spat upon, tend to suggest to you that you might not have as much firepower as advertised?
Anyway, "Crooks and Liars" relates the subsequent progress of an alleged unsuccessful campaign by Malkin to turn the public against Geraldo. It's the strangest part of the story, according to me and certainly casts some light on Malkin's actual state of mind.
Meanwhile there is Malkin's own blog, where she sets the 'nutroots' straight with her usual grace and finesse:
I’ve lost track of how many times the nutroots have gleefully declared my demise.
Oh, how they wish, wish, wish it were so! (Stiiiiill going)
Why no, dear, I don't wish it at all. With Coulter in a certain amount of trouble for announcing that she views the Jewish faith is simply an imperfect form of Christianity,' I'd be terribly upset if you went down the U-bend at this juncture. You and Coulter are my go-to gals for my favorite political emotion: incredulous amusement. I'd miss you terribly if a tornado of adversity came whirling in to Malkinland from stage left to drop a small farmhouse on you. Anyway.
In her blog, she cackles over the various theories about her going in her usual vein, with the usual jolly references to 'moonbats' and 'loons' and 'the left-o-sphere," because anyone who doesn't see eye to eye with Malkin must by definition be mentally challenged and delusional.. It must be so nice to be so certain you know all the answers and are smarter than almost anyone except Bill O'Reilly.
The latest moonbat tempest in a teapot concerns an e-mail response I sent to readers over the weekend who have been asking about my absence from the O’Reilly Factor. I had received several hundred messages and it was wrong to keep ignoring long-time fans wondering what happened. I took the time to personally respond to each inquiry. It is an awkward situation, but I answered straightforwardly:
I did not plan on blogging it and making a big to-do. It is what it is. But some blabbermouth apparently forwarded the e-mail to a cable TV gossip blog. The left-o-sphere picked it up from there (interesting how all of these same blogs ignored the spitting threat in the first place), now spreading wild rumors that I’ve been fired, concocting imaginary scenarios of tearful resignations, tinfoil-rattling in hopes that there’s some other conspiratorial reason behind my decision, falsely asserting that it was somehow related to my coverage of the S-CHIP debate, etc., etc., etc.(Stiiiiill going)
Phew, that's a relief! I'm so glad that it was all Geraldo's fault but sorry that she was terrorized into quitting by his ' spitting threat' (though come on; I'd assume she hears that one practically every day). And I can say without hesitation that it never crossed my mind that her corporate masters would be offended by the offensiveness of her SCHIP debate coverage. They never have been before.
But you heard it from her, folks: Malkin is going nowhere. Oh how I'm glad, glad, glad that it is so!
Inside Cable News responds quite reasonably to being called 'a cable TV gossip blog.' As you can see, Malkin states that a 'blabbermouth' (honest to God, her writing style and mid-Twentieth Century-style slang remind me so much of my great-aunt's family newsletters) forwarded her resignation letter to ICN. "Though Malkin would disagree apparently, this was a news story. ICN blogged the original Rivera incident and followed the story as it unfolded. This wasn’t gossip. I could care less what talent does in their off hours as long as it’s not criminal. If it affects what goes over the air however, it’s news. And it’s fair territory." (Inside Cable News)
An ICN reader called Fish Oil who seems fond of Malkin and not so fond of Geraldo Rivera comments:
Malkin made a principled decision and she should be commended for that….although taking her ball and going home seems a bit immature to me, especially when it comes to dealing with a hack like Geraldo Rivera.
As far as her blog goes…if she is the accomplished writer that she says she is, then wild comments on “far-left” websites should be brushed off. In my opinion, she should try to avoid playing victim to the “left-o-sphere.”
There, how's that for 'fair and balanced'?
Also (though not likewise) 'fair and balanced' and highly characteristic is this article from her site, called "Go ahead and spit Geraldo." What I love best about the rhetoric of certain of these so-called right wing tubthumpers (as opposed, say, to normal Republicans) is the way they evidently don't need logic or reason to 'prove' a 'point' or shore up their conclusions. But who wants logic or reason when Malkin is in the vein of angry satire?
