Posted by Damozel | At Central Sanity, John Baird notes that the EU seems to be seriously considering the notion of boycotting China's Olympics as a way to protest China's "inaction"---or, as I'd put it, obstruction---in addressing the Burma crackdown.
This is an idea that is well worth considering. When the U.S. boycotted the 1980 Olympics in the Soviet Union, 64 nations followed. That kind of embarassment could pressure China to act on issues such as Darfur and Iran, not to mention China's own miserable human rights record. Boycotting China's 2008 Olympics for Burma? (citing the EU Observer)
Amen. Cf. Columnist Joan Smith in The Independent on Sunday, here.
If you also factor in China's lack of action on Darfur you have a pretty good recipe for the most boycotted Olympics ever.

Let us hope. It's not right to enable them in their refusal to change their thinking on human rights.
