From today's Washington Post:
"One day after President Bush announced a limited drawdown of U.S. troops from Iraq by next summer, defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said yesterday that it might be possible to reduce U.S. forces there further over the course of next year, down to approximately 100,000 troops by the end of 2008."
Just yesterday, President Bush told the nation that he might (maybe, possibly) withdraw about 22,000 troops next summer (WaPo-2). Last week, General David Petraeus said about 30,000 troops might be withdrawn by June 2008.
In June 2006, the Bush Administration envisioned withdrawing half of our troops from Iraq by December 2007 (Think Progress citing NY Times). In June 2007, officials envisioned withdrawal "by late 2008 or early 2009" (BN-Politics and WaPo-3).
The Administration seems to want to be liked to phrases like "troop withdrawal" and "troop drawdown." At the same time, Administration officials keep changing the dates. What are we ordinary Americans supposed to think about that?
