posted by Damozel | At Pajamas Media here, you can watch "[n]ewly naturalized U.S. citizen Christoper Hitchens...and Richard Miniter toast the anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, and its primary author, Thomas Jefferson."
Then check him out on YouTube: "The Hour: Interview with Christopher Hitchens (Part 1) by George Stroumboulopoulos" for which I am indebted to Greywolf at Hitchens Watch. He discusses Dawkins, Schiavo, people getting fed up with the threat of the theocrats, and the impact of his blue eyes on sales of his book.
BONUS FOOTAGE AT YOU TUBE OF HITCH ON "HANNITY AND COLMES", DISCUSSING THE DEATH OF JERRY FALWELL:
Hitch, Hannity, and Colmes on Fox (link is to YouTube). I hadn't seen this footage on the death of Falwell (and I didn't really approve of Hitch's article in Slate, putting me, in this one instance, on the same team as "Republican Strategist Ralph Reed" and Sean Hannity...!) Even so: watch Hitchens tear Hannity a new one (including a very unkind reference to "your long, unlettered question")! Watch him refer to "Republican Strategist Ralph Reed" as "the Abramoff faction"!
Oh, this is so uncivil. I cannot approve. And yet:
Colmes: Is Hitchens not hurting Falwell's family?
HItchens: "I don't care...but they can take comfort from the extraordinary piety and stupidity and near uniformity of the coverage of his death."
Speaking for the other team is "Republican Strategist" Ralph Reed, who is all about "the civlity of our discourse" and showing respect for the dead. In response, Hitchens plays "the world's smallest violin" and gets all up in his grill too. "Don't have me on and say I have to say, "I'm terribly sorry he's dead." He then calls Falwell "an extremely dangerous demagogue...who committed treason."
Then they let Hannity loose on him. See the Baiter baited! "Excuse me, sir; I did not attack his family....You, no doubt, as a Christian, require hypocrisy of people..."
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Um, I mean....speaking as a Christian myself, and as an advocate of civility, Hitch was so wrong. And yet! Watch Hannity sputter with indignation! Watch Hitch rudely and repeatedly interrupt "Republican Strategist Ralph Reed": "Tell it Jack Abramoff.
Hitchens' parting shot: "Give Falwell an enema and he could be buried in a matchbox." I do not approve. And yet...Hitch is somehow so cathartic.
