You may have heard about Sen. Joe Lieberman's Sunday stint on Face the Nation, where he implied a link between Iran and 9/11, and claimed that Iran is helping terrorists harm U.S. soldiers. Quel déjas vu!
Yesterday, I found an article about a media campaign claiming that Iran sent arms to America's enemies in Afghanistan--which Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Nato Commander Dan McNeil strongly denied. The article states:...
"The allegation that Iran has reversed a decade-long policy and is now supporting the Taliban, conveyed in a series of press articles quoting 'senior officials' in recent weeks, is related to a broader effort by officials aligned with Vice President Dick Cheney to portray Iran as supporting Sunni insurgents, including al Qaeda....
"In the most dramatic version of the story, ABC reported 'NATO officials' as saying they had 'caught Iran red-handed shipping heavy arms....' The report failed to refer to any evidence of Iranian government involvement.
Both Gates and McNeil denied flatly last week that there is any evidence linking Iranian authorities to those arms....(IPS/Truthout)
I hope that our media will henceforth refrain from running stories without ruthlessly verifying officials' claims.
