Today, London police found an abandoned mint-green Mercedes loaded with gasoline, nails and a detonator near the city's theater district and disarmed the bomb (Washington Post). Officials suspect terrorists but haven't definitively said which terrorists.
Terrorism is a good guess, given what "terrorism" means....
Though light skinned, if the Bush twins set off a car bomb near a San Francisco nightclub that kicked them out before last call, it would (by definition) qualify as an act of "terrorism." Maybe the clue is in the car's color. Who likes green, aside from the Irish? Green Peace, environmentalists, Laura Ashley....
A Scotland Yard official said if the bomb had gone off there could have been "serious injury or loss of life." (BBC) Yes, explosions, flames and flying nails likely would hurt people.
CNN is obsessing, even covering damage that might have occurred had the bomb gone off. Atrios commented (Wet Yourself):
"Watching the CNN coverage of the thwarted car bombing in London I'm struck by how the coverage makes something that didn't happen thousands of miles away sound like something around the block. You know, foiled bomb plot in London! Terrorists crawling up through your toilet!"
Thank God London's people were spared the explosion. The big question in the U.S.: can the Bush Administration effectively link the thwarted bomb to operatives in Iran?
