While the world anxiously awaited (and may still be awaiting) Paris Hilton's arrival at court, the Administration announced that Bush intends to replace Joint Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Pace--America's highest military official--"rather than reappoint him and risk a Senate confirmation struggle focusing on the Iraq War" (CSPAN).
Defense Secretary Robert Gates will recommend Defense Secretary Robert Gates Admiral Mike Mullen to replace Pace. Having served as Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Pace was involved in all major decisions regarding the now "intensely unpopular" Iraq war (Washington Post ).
Some 3,500 U.S. troops have died in this war, and thousands more have been wounded.
