Speaking of incivility.....I can hardly believe it, but my sweet Ann---the Dems' secret weapon, I call her---apparently is fed up with Bush. You can see the video right here. ""I do get the sense now that people are reaching across the divide
because we're all waiting for this nincompoop to be gone," Coulter said
today on"Good Morning America," referring to President Bush." (ABC News) .
Of course, she also compared him to FDR. The war, she says, is the one thing she thinks he has done well. ""I think he's been magnificent on
the war, and his domestic policy has been an embarrassment," Coulter said. "The
immigration bill is causing problems not just among his base, but among Republicans and Democrats"" (ABC News)
Naturally Democrats and liberal pundits are agog. Have all our birthdays come at once?
"George W. Bush must really be in trouble. Even one of his most hair-raising defenders, Ann Coulter, has turned on him," said Editor and Publisher. At The Washington Post, Howard Kurtz said:
Give me a moment to catch my breath....Is Bush now toast with the entire conservative movement?...Still . . . nincompooop? I know the right is mighty ticked off over Bush's immigration bill--or "shamnesty," as Michelle Malkin calls it--but has he been totally written off? Isn't Coulter a pretty good leading indicator? And if that's the case, are people like Ann admitting that liberals were right about W. and she was wrong? If "we're finally all on the same page," didn't it take a helluva long time for her to get there? I sure would have liked to hear her elaborate. (The Washington Post)
Me too. Instead, she went on to say other things that were more in keeping with the Ann Coulter we love to detest. For example, she apologized to homosexuals for implying---" I did not call John Edwards the "F" word. I said I couldn't talk about him because you go into rehab for using that word"---that John Edwards was "a fag."'
I wouldn't insult gays by comparing them to John Edwards. That would be mean, but about the same time -- you know -- Bill Maher was not joking and saying he wished [Vice President] Dick Cheney had been killed in a terrorist attack.* So I've learned my lesson. If I'm going to say anything about John Edwards in the future, I'll just wish he has been killed in a terrorist assassination plot. (Media Matters)
[*The Maher reference is to a comment Bill M. made during Real Time back in March and subsequently discussed in a fun interview with Bill O'Reilly on The O'Reilly Factor and in a Huffington Post blog here. Moving on...]
She also feels that Giuliani is too liberal for a Republican candidate. Actually, she was pretty mean to him too. """It has been at least a couple of years since Rudy Giuliani has appeared on 'Saturday Night Live' in drag, so that's good," Coulter quipped. "He has only one ex-wife who has appeared in the 'Vagina Monologues' so those are the pros. We'll see what happens."" (ABC News) Nice! I don't like him either, Ann!
Hey, I've agreed with Ann Coulter twice. Could I...could I be turning neocon?
Nah. When Cuomo questioned her comparison of Bush-the-Magnificent-War-President to FDR, she earnestly adduced arguments in support of the comparison
.I really think it is the accurate historical comparison. I mean, if you look at what's going on with Social Security now, we have completely mortgaged our future. Bush did try and do something about it, and I give him credit for that. Our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be paying for all these huge Ponzi schemes; socialist programs that FDR put in place. Most economists agree that the Depression would have been over by around '36 if there had been no government intervention, but the one thing you have to say about FDR is he fought World War II. (Media Matters)
When asked to name her favorite candidate, she said that if she had to choose between the current candidates, she'd choose Nicholas Sarkozy, the president of France. (Wait....France? Didn't Coulter say, "Democrats couldn't care less if people in Indiana hate them. But if Europeans curl their lips, liberals can't look at themselves in the mirror." )? Her actual favorite candidate is Duncan Hunter (R-CA), who is "magnificent." "He's a genuine war hero. He has one son, I think, in Iraq, one in Afghanistan. He is good on every single issue. He has been out front on building a wall. He did build a wall at San Diego. He's very good on -- on the life issue. He's good on everything."" (Media Matters)
I don't know why I have such trouble with the idea of Coulter as a pro-lifer, or as God's avenging angel, especially after Godless----could it be because of some of the things she's alleged to have said? (I mean besides this: "Jesus Christ died for my sins, and that's all I need to know", which actually ain't even true and explains a lot about the thinking behind Godless). But she says so right here:
The New York Times this weekend had an op-ed piece this weekend with a woman -- Melissa [sic: Melinda] Henneberger, I think it is -- saying the Democrats have got to stop being pro-choice. You are losing as long as you keep making abortion your big issue. I hope Democrats don't listen to her, but I hope Republicans notice. This is a winning issue for us: protecting little babies. (Media Matters)
Aw, that's so sweet. But correct me if I'm wrong: isn't she saying that she doesn't want the godless Dems to come to their senses and start "protecting little babies" because if they do, the Republicans would lose a political advantage? Is that the Christian spirit? Did Adam fall and Christ die to ensure that Republicans would always remain in power?
Oh Ann. If Jesus died for your sins, the least you can do is pray that your enemies---all liberals everywhere--will see the light too. He'd like that. But of course, Coulter has very special views on how you go about converting people; evidently, it only applies to people living in nonchristian countries, not to people against whom you are actually at war (like liberals). And she has some tried and tested ideas about how to go about it as well. "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity....We carpet-bombed German cities; we killed civilians. That's war. And this is war." It's true that some little babies might die in the wreckage. Even so: "Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius!" as the man said. (And of course, we didn't really have to convert the Germans.)
