Posted by PBS Mind | Yesterday the Global Carbon Project, a clearinghouse for data for UN-related and other scientific groups, revealed that the world carbon-emission rate nearly tripled between 2002 and 2004. Prior calculations put it at 1.1 percent per year, but it's now around 3 percent. This means that the previous calculations of how long it would take for us to meet certain milestones, calculated using the lower number in recent UN reports, are, obviously, probably off by a considerable amount.
In short, time is running out sooner than we think.
The United States, a country whose government is nothing if not wise and benevolent, immediately jumped into the fray to take action. This, from an ABC News report, is what it's doing:
"The analysis comes at a time when negotiators for the G-8 group of leading industrial countries have been trying to work out the wording of a section on climate change, proposed for the final declaration at the group's meeting in Germany next month. Last week, US negotiators red-penciled key portions, severely weakening the statement."
I don't know why I continue to be surprised at this stuff. Here we are with an entire planet of available scientists, with arguably the best-trained in our own nation, and who does W invite to the White House so he can congratulate him on his mastery of climate-change science? Michael Crichton. And why? Because Crichton attempted to gull the American public through mass-market entertainment into believing it was OK to do nothing.
Crichton may well be able to afford to do nothing. The rest of us can't.
