Taxing the Internet would be one way to reduce input from bloggers and surfers that makes it harder for politicians to escape public scrutiny. Then again, maybe officials from all levels of government simply want more of our money to play with. A post at Andrew Sullivan's Daily Dish suggests that an Internet tax may be coming [citing SlashDot]:
"State and local governments this week resumed a push to lobby Congress for far-reaching changes on two different fronts: . . . [including] being able to levy new monthly taxes on DSL and other connections. One senator is even predicting taxes on e-mail." [ CNETnews.com]
According to InfoWorld, the current moratorium on Internet taxes ends November 1st. After 20 minutes of tax-free searching, I found four bills relating to Internet taxes (three would permanently ban certain taxes). Politech has links to the bills' text, including the potentially blogger-unfriendly bill sponsored by Senator Mike Enzi (R-WY) on May 22. It couldn't hurt to email your congressmen.
