Weeks ago, after vetoing a war funding bill because it included timetables for withdrawing troops from Iraq, President Bush said the bill was:
“a prescription for chaos and confusion. . . It makes no sense to tell the enemy when you plan to start withdrawing.” [Emphasis added.]
Yesterday, after signing a timetable-free war funding bill, the President told God and everyone--including the enemy--when he plans to withdraw troops. According to the Washington Post (citing NYT),
President Bush "is working on ideas for cutting U.S. forces in Iraq by as much as half, to roughly 100,000, by mid-2008."
As well as a shift in public-relations tactics, it seems a shift in war strategy. Where can I get one of those big foam cutouts of a flip-flop? Or is that premature? Think Progress reminds us of similar promises of withdrawal that haven't come to pass.
