Yesterday, President Bush announced "I stand by Al"--as the Senate prepared for a "no confidence" vote re: Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, fueled by the fired U.S. Attorneys scandal and the emerging illegal-wiretapping scandal [Washington Post]. Bush characterized the move as "pure political theater."
Obviously committed to the thespian theme, Bush added that Congress: "ought to get the job done of passing legislation, as opposed to figuring out how to be actors on the political theater stage." Can you see the pots and kettles?
Bush similarly stood by his man last year, when retired military commanders called for then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's resignation over the mishandled Iraq War.
