Long weekends leave people either recharged or hungover. Sometimes, it's hard to tell which--as in the case of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's take on the war funding bill that Congress passed Thursday.
Pelosi said the bill's passage "was the start of a whole new direction in Iraq . . . I think the president's policy is going to unravel now" ( Washington Post).
Due respect, Madame Speaker: Congress just gave Bush $120 billion in new war funding.
Pelosi voted against the bill, with 139 other House Dems--but 232 voted for it. Pelosi said the 140 "no" votes sent a message to Bush: "No more funding."

Don't lay sole responsiblity on the House: the Senate also approved the funding (see who voted and how). As they craft sound bytes and strategies, do elected officials remember that actual lives are at stake? (See pics of Mile-Long Memorial honoring 3,844 dead soldiers.)
