I'd never heard of "vote caging," a reportedly illegal means of trying to remove voters from the rolls. Yesterday, I found a piece by journalist Greg Palast stating that Monica Goodling admitted at the U.S. House Judiciary Committee's hearings on the fired U.S. Attorneys that Bush Administration officials were involved in vote caging in 2004.
My right eyebrow jumped, deepening my forehead creases by yet another micrometer. According to Palast, campaign operatives:
"sent hundreds of thousands of letters marked "Do not forward" to voters' homes. Letters returned ("caged") were used as evidence to block these voters' right to cast a ballot on grounds they were registered at phony addresses. Who were the evil fakers? Homeless men, students on vacation and --- you got to love this --- American soldiers."
Palast's piece is on BradBlog. Goodling's testimony (video) is at the Judiciary Committee's website.
