Sherrie Gahn, principal of Whitney Elementary School in Las Vegas, has started a food bank to help feed students and their families. Reportedly, about 75% of Ms. Gahn's 622 students living in the "Boulder Strip" neighborhood of Las Vegas have experienced some period of homelessness or are at risk of experiencing it. Jason O'Neill, a San Diego eighth grader who started the company Pencil Bugs when he was nine years old, raised money to buy a teddy bears. Jason plans to give the teddy bears to children at Rady's Children's hospital in San Diego. [MSNBC via HappyNews.com]
