Why do journalists and bloggers repeating the words of unnamed "officials"? And why do said "officials" unofficially give previews of announcements scheduled for the future? What's the point of official announcements, if un-named "officials" leak their content to the press in advance?
It's like watching ads for a movie before it comes out. I cannot help getting the sense that someone is trying to manipulate us ordinary folks.
Incidentally, it troubles me that "officials in both parties" are leaking this stuff, because our national security should be beyond partisan politics. Yeah, I know: nothing is beyond partisan politics to the Bush Administration -- a group of folks that also habitually leaked info to the press via unnamed sources -- but we're talking about a new administration, here.
I find it troubling that so many journalists and bloggers get caught up in gossip and speculation, especially when truly important issues are out there waiting to be researched and understood and accurately explained to the public: things like where trillions of our tax dollars will end up when the series of bailouts are finalized, and who/what specifically caused our massive economic crises.
Memeorandum has commentary.
