McCain Campaign Again Uses Music Without Permission

Rumcove22a4 by Teh Nutroots | Was the campaign having a senior moment, or what?  Annie and Nancy Wilson of  "Heart" are furious that the McCain campaign has used their "Barracuda" as a theme song for Sarah "Barracuda" Palin. "The Republican campaign did not ask for permission to use the song, nor would they have been granted that permission," they said tersely.(Insider)

We've been down this road before with their unathorized use of material by Jackson Brown and Mike Myers.  While both campaigns seem to 'borrow" freely without feeling any need to ask permission, it becomes a problem when you use work by people who oppose your views.  And aren't the Republicans the party of property rights?

Specifically, the Wilson sisters are as infuriated as Jackson Brown that their work has been used---without authority--- to represent views that are not their own.  The Heart girls further said:

"Sarah Palin's views and values in NO WAY represent us as American women. We ask that our song 'Barracuda' no longer be used to promote her image. The song 'Barracuda' was written in the late 70s as a scathing rant against the soulless, corporate nature of the music business, particularly for women. (The 'barracuda' represented the business.) While Heart did not and would not authorize the use of their song at the RNC, there's irony in Republican strategists' choice to make use of it there." (EW.com)

This is just the latest in a long line of living rock and roll musicians requesting that the McCain campaign stop using their songs, which is why he will eventually be reduced to playing the entire Chuck Berry catalog again and again. Ha ha just kidding, Chuck Berry is still alive, so he will also be calling John McCain soon.

John Cole:

Why the hell can’t the McCain campaign respect personal property rights? Jesus, this is like the 15th time they have used music without permission. Are we going to have to add personal property rights to the list of things the modern conservatives don’t give a shit about? I guess it is not surprising, considering they can not even exploit wounded veterans competently.

UPDATE:  Nicole Belle gets the last word:

Gotta love these “Rule of Law” Republicans....You know, the first time you make this mistake, I can write it off as a honest error.  But over and over and over, especially using songs from known Democrats like the Wilson sisters and Jackson Browne.  That just goes over the abyss into complete arrogance.
